At Braybrook Primary Academy, we believe mathematics is much more than numbers on a page – it’s a way of making sense of the world around us. Through developing their skills in calculation, reasoning and problem-solving, our children come to understand that mathematics is an essential life skill. It underpins science, technology and engineering, supports financial literacy, and opens the door to countless career opportunities.
Our Maths curriculum is designed to give every child a strong foundation for understanding the world. It nurtures logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics. Most importantly, it encourages a sense of enjoyment, curiosity, and confidence. At Braybrook, we want our children to feel safe to make mistakes, to ‘talk like mathematicians,’ and to apply their knowledge in a variety of ways as they develop fluency in reasoning and problem solving.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, pupils build their mathematical understanding through hands-on activities, exploration, and discussion. They learn to count, read, write and order numbers to 100 and beyond. They develop a wide range of mental calculation skills and gain confidence in using them in different situations. Through practical activities, they begin to explore shape and space, building on their knowledge of the world around them. Pupils also start to use mathematical language, explaining their methods and reasoning as they solve problems.
Key Stage 2
As pupils move into Key Stage 2, they begin to use the number system with greater confidence and independence. They progress from counting reliably to calculating fluently with all four operations, always encouraged to try mental methods first. Pupils extend their understanding of shape, space and measurement in a variety of real-world contexts. They also develop their ability to discuss, reason and present solutions using precise mathematical vocabulary, diagrams and charts, equipping them with the skills to think, explain and problem-solve like true mathematicians.
